Households
HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2005-2009 there were 107,000 households in Galveston County. The average household size was 2.6 people.
Families made up 68 percent of the households in Galveston County. This figure includes both married-couple families (51 percent) and other families (18 percent). Nonfamily households made up 32 percent of all households in Galveston County. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.
HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS:In 2005-2009, Galveston County had a total of 131,000 housing units, 18 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 72 percent was in single-unit structures, 22 percent was in multi-unit structures, and 5 percent was mobile homes. Thirty percent of the housing units were built since 1990.
OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2005-2009, Galveston County had 107,000 occupied housing units - 72,000 (68 percent) owner occupied and 35,000 (32 percent) renter occupied. Four percent of the households did not have telephone service and 6 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Forty percent had two vehicles and another 18 percent had three or more.
GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: In 2005-2009, 81 percent of the people at least one year old living in Galveston County were living in the same residence one year earlier; 11 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 5 percent from another county in the same state, 2 percent from another state, and less than 0.5 percent from abroad.

For people reporting one race alone, 76 percent was White; 14 percent was Black or African American; 1 percent was American Indian and Alaska Native; 3 percent was Asian; less than 0.5 percent was Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 4 percent was Some other race. Two percent reported Two or more races. Twenty-one percent of the people in Galveston County was Hispanic. Sixty percent of the people in Galveston County was White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

EDUCATION: In 2005-2009, 85 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 26 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Fifteen percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.
The total school enrollment in Galveston County was 77,000 in 2005-2009. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 9,400 and elementary or high school enrollment was 49,000 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 19,000.
POPULATION OF Galveston County: In 2005-2009, Galveston County had a total population of 282,000 - 144,000 (51 percent) females and 139,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 36.7 years. Twenty-six percent of the population was under 18 years and 11 percent was 65 years and older.

| UTMB Victory Lakes Addition - Thursday, November 08, 2012 UTMB plans a big expansion at Victory Lakes! The University of Texas Medical Branch has announced plans for an $82 million expansion at its League City location along the Gulf Freeway, between the League City Parkway and FM 646. The 142,000 SF expansion would include 39 inpatient beds, 17 emergency/urgent care beds, additional operating rooms, endoscopy rooms and 25,000 SF of shell space for future development. This will be the second building on the 60+acre tract. UTMB opened the 110,000 SF Specialty Care Center in 2010. |
