Housing Characteristics
HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2005-2009, Galveston County had a total of 131,000 housing units, 18 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 72 percent was in single-unit structures, 22 percent was in multi-unit structures, and 5 percent was mobile homes. Thirty percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2005-2009, Galveston County had 107,000 occupied housing units - 72,000 (68 percent) owner occupied and 35,000 (32 percent) renter occupied. Four percent of the households did not have telephone service and 6 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Forty percent had two vehicles and another 18 percent had three or more.

Housing Market
According to the MLS, the Median Priced home for 2007 was $174,400. According to American Community Survey 2005-1007, The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $1,473, nonmortgaged owners $509, and renters $751. Thirty-one percent of owners with mortgages, 20 percent of owners without mortgages, and 43 percent of renters in Galveston County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.

| Tanger Outlet Center Mall - Tuesday, September 06, 2011 The ground breaking ceremony for the Texas City Simon Tanger Factory Outlet Center was held August 30th. Steven Tanger, president and CEO of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and John Klein, president of Simon Premium Outlets, attended the ceremony. The facility will include 350,000 square feet in first phase of the project. It is located on 55 acres, west of Interstate 45 and south of Holland Road. Phase one will include 90 stores and is expected to be a major draw to the local area. It will be similar to the mall located in San Marcos, Texas. The Outlet is expected to generate $8 million in yearly sales tax revenue, create 400 construction jobs, 900 full and part time retail and management positions and be as successful as the San Marcus centers. |
